Way back in 1930, JK Wilkinson opened his first store in Leicester. And since then, we’ve not stopped growing. Today, we’re still family run, but now we have almost 400 stores across the UK – with big plans to open more. Impressive stuff.
As we’re not a PLC, we don’t have shareholders to answer to like many other high street giants. Instead, we’ve always put our people and customers before profit. It’s about making business decisions that are morally spot on, ethically sound and well, the right thing to do. To learn more about how we’ve grown from humble beginnings download our PDF here.
Shaping our future. Showing passion. Pulling together. Making it fun. Todobilaction. They’re our values in a nutshell. And they’re everything to us. They guide the way we do pretty much anything around here. From the way we work to the way we speak to each other and our customers, our values are a big part of how we’ll achieve our vision. So, what is our vision exactly? Well, it’s all about getting ‘to-dos’ done!
Our customers know they can come to us with a to-do list, full of all that everyday stuff they need to make their world go round. And we love nothing more than helping them tick it all off. It’s an amazing feeling we call ‘todobilation’. Todobilation is our mission – and something we’ve been achieving for more than 80 years!
Here at Wilko, we care about the world around us just as much as we do each other. So, whether you want to hold a bake sale or take a paid day off work to volunteer for a charity, we’ll back you all the way.
We’ve always encouraged community spirit and got behind issues that affect our local area. Employing local people to boost the local economy, we also work with organisations like the Shaw Trust, Remploy and JobCentre Plus to provide local jobs and work with local schools to promote life-long learning.
Acting responsibly and sustainably is really important to us. From our policies and procedures, to best practice, we target ourselves to constantly improve how we do business and minimise our impact on the environment. For example, we aim to minimise carbon emissions by efficiently reducing, re-using and recycling waste
We’re passionate about fundraising and encourage everyone to work with local and regional charities – we’ll even match your fundraising efforts! Each store has a special budget to help local organisations too. And our ‘Local Stars’ programme rewards talented, caring people who do brilliant things in the community whilst overcoming personal barriers.
The same care extends to how we source, transport and sell our products. We only buy from suppliers who have sustainable practices and materials and who look after their people and environment. That’s why we manage our supplier relationships in line with internationally recognised codes of practice for labour, like the Ethical Trading Initiative.
Chief Operating Officer
We’re buying more stores, refitting our existing stores and filling them with our own brand products. We’re clearer than ever on who we should be selling to – who our Wilko customers are – and how we can grow as a business. And all the time, we’re recruiting people who share our attitude, and who’re passionate about helping our customers run, repair, maintain and improve their homes and gardens. Wilko is a business with a plan. It’s a new plan and we’re right at the start, but even so: our to do list is looking good.
